Old Ballantruan, 50%, $60
Smoky Speysiders are still quite rare. But given that smoky Islay whiskies are hot right now, I can see more Speysiders (and other areas of Scotland) stepping up to the plate with a full offering of smoke. As you might expect, Old Ballantruan is a hybrid of Islay and Speyside-youthful, smoky peat notes married with malty, toffee, cake batter sweetness. In the mix, you'll pick up some chocolate and background citrus fruit. It doesn't exude the brine and assertive intensity that some Islay whiskies have. Instead it shows a softer, sweeter underbelly. A nice effort for its price.
